AI training on your data (1)

  • Severity 3 · notable

Your Privacy Settings(opens in a new tab or window) allow you to control whether your general usage data and/or User Content can improve AI-powered features. Canva and its trusted partners may use this to develop and improve AI-powered features if this is consistent with your Privacy Settings(opens in a new tab or window), which you can review and update at any time. We will not use User Content of Canva Education for AI training.

Canva can use your designs and content to improve its AI features, unless you change your privacy settings to prevent this.

Your private or sensitive designs could be used to train AI models that benefit other users, not you.

Auto-renewal traps (2)

  • Severity 3 · notable

If you're subscribing to a paid plan your subscription will automatically renew each billing cycle, for example, on a monthly or annual basis as applicable. We'll notify you before auto-renewal of your subscription. You can cancel your subscription at any time, subject to section (d) below.

Canva automatically renews your subscription and will charge you for the next period unless you cancel beforehand.

You could be charged for another subscription term if you forget to cancel, even if you no longer need the service.

  • Severity 3 · notable

At the end of your free trial, Canva will charge the relevant subscription fee for the next billing cycle to your nominated payment method, unless you cancel your subscription prior to the end of the free trial. If you have access to a free trial or pilot, your access to features made available as part of that free trial or pilot will cease if you do not enter into a paid subscription prior to the end of the pilot period.

Canva will charge you for a paid subscription after your free trial ends, unless you cancel before the trial is over.

You will be automatically charged for a paid plan if you forget to cancel your free trial.

Surprise price hikes (1)

  • Severity 3 · notable

Canva reserves the right to change its prices and plans at any time. If you're on a subscription plan and we increase your price, any increase in price will not apply until your next renewal or thirty (30) days after notice, whichever is later. If you do not wish to pay the increased price, you may cancel your subscription.

Canva can change its prices at any time, and price increases will apply to your next renewal unless you cancel.

You might be charged more for your subscription at renewal time without much notice if you don't actively cancel.

Termination friction (2)

  • Severity 4 · material

In the event of a termination of your subscription due to a Violation by you, you will not receive any refund and will immediately pay any outstanding fees for the remaining period of your subscription. Upon termination, you must cease using the Service. You will lose access to your Designs, User Content, and any other information uploaded to the Service (and we may delete all such data unless legally prohibited) after termination.

If you break the rules, Canva will not refund you and will charge you for the rest of your subscription term, then delete your data.

You'll pay for the full term and lose access to all your work if Canva terminates your account for a violation.

  • Severity 4 · material

  • Severity 3 · notable

In no event will either party be liable for any consequential, incidental, indirect, special, exemplary or punitive damages, losses, or expenses (including but not limited to business interruption, lost business or lost profits) even if it has been advised of their possible existence and notwithstanding the failure of essential purpose of any remedy. These limitations will not apply to liabilities arising out of your indemnification obligations or your breach of the section entitled ‘Restrictions on Use of the Service.’

Canva is not liable for any indirect, special, or consequential damages, like lost profits or business interruption.

These limitations will not apply to liabilities arising out of your indemnification obligations or your breach of the section entitled ‘restrictions on use of the service.’

If Canva causes you damages, their total liability is capped at $100 or the amount you paid them in the last year, whichever is greater.

You can't recover significant losses if Canva's service fails and causes you financial harm beyond what you paid them.

  • Severity 2 · minor

The Service is provided on an “as-is” and “as-available” basis. To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law and subject to any non-excludable rights and remedies you may have under applicable law, Canva, its licensors, and its suppliers, expressly disclaim any and all warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including, but not limited to, warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement.

You must defend Canva against any claims arising from your violation of their terms or your uploaded content.

You could be responsible for paying legal fees and damages if someone sues Canva because of your actions or content.

Right to silently change terms (2)

  • Severity 4 · material

Canva may add, change or remove features or functionality to the Service; modify or introduce limitations to storage or other features (which may vary by plan type); or discontinue the Service altogether at any time. If you're on a paid subscription and Canva discontinues the Service you're using during your subscription, Canva will migrate or make available to you a substantially similar service provided by Canva (if available) and if it’s unable to do so, Canva will provide you a pro-rata refund of fees prepaid for the remaining period of your subscription.

Canva can add, remove, or change features, or even discontinue the service, at any time.

Key features you rely on could be removed or changed, or the entire service could be shut down, with limited options for you.

  • Severity 4 · material

We may modify these Terms (and any policies or agreements referenced in these Terms) at any time. We will post the most current version of these Terms on Canva.com. We will provide you with reasonable advance notice of any change to the Terms that, in our reasonable determination, materially adversely affect your rights or your use of the Service.

Canva can change the terms of service at any time, and they will notify you of significant changes.

The rules you agreed to today could change materially, impacting your use of the service without your explicit consent.

Methodology

SaaSGuard uses an automated pipeline: a daily Playwright crawler captures each vendor’s public Terms of Service, Privacy Policy, and DPA. Google’s Gemini 2.5 Flash classifies each clause into one of 8 risk categories with a severity score (1–5). Clauses are cross-referenced against a curated database of real lawsuits and FTC actions via embedding-based similarity matching. Grades are computed from per-category max severity; full source code is available on request.
